Year B Easter Ascension Day
Lectionary Meaning
Theological Focus
Ascension Day marks the completion of Christ’s earthly ministry and his exaltation to the right hand of the Father. It is a feast of hope, affirming that our humanity has been taken into the heart of the Godhead, opening the way for the Holy Spirit’s descent upon the Church.
Scriptural Connection
Acts 1 depicts the transition from sight to faith. As the disciples gaze upward, they are redirected by the angels to the mission at hand. This text applies to the modern Church by reminding us that Christ’s physical absence is the condition for his universal presence through the Spirit.
Sermon Ideas
Preach on the "Upward Look and the Outward Move." How do we avoid the trap of "standing and looking into heaven" while ignoring the needs of the world? Focus on the promise of power and the commission to be witnesses of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
