Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

The liturgical year concludes with the Feast of the Reign of Christ, a day that proclaims Jesus as the ultimate authority over all creation. It serves as a final accounting of our communal life, looking forward to the consummation of history when all things are brought under his peaceful and just rule.

Scriptural Connection

The separation of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25 reveals a startling truth: our devotion to the King is measured by our service to the marginalized. Christ identifies himself so closely with the hungry, the stranger, and the prisoner that our treatment of them is our treatment of him. This is the hallmark of his kingdom.
