Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

The Incarnation is the pivot of history, where the eternal Word enters time. We celebrate the mystery of God becoming flesh to dwell among us, illuminating the darkness. This night marks the beginning of a new creation, where the divine and human are inextricably joined in the person of Jesus.

Scriptural Connection

John 1 presents a cosmic perspective on the Nativity. It moves beyond the manger to the pre-existent Logos, challenging us to see Christ as the source of all life and light. In a world often shadowed by despair, the text reminds us that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Sermon Ideas

Preach on the Light that the darkness cannot overcome. Focus on the radical hospitality of God and how we are called to receive the Word. Sermon hooks might include the concept of dwelling or tabernacling among us, emphasizing God’s permanent commitment to our humanity and the invitation to become children of God.
