Year C Easter Ascension Day
Lectionary Meaning
Theological Focus
Ascension Day marks the completion of Christ’s earthly ministry and the beginning of his cosmic reign. It is not an absence, but a new mode of presence, as the humanity of Jesus is taken into the heart of the Trinity. This feast celebrates the glorification of our human nature and the promise that where the Head has gone, the Body will follow.
Scriptural Connection
The account in Acts 1 depicts the disciples gazing upward, only to be redirected toward their mission on earth. This reminds us that our heavenly citizenship compels us toward earthly engagement, empowered by the promise of the Holy Spirit. We are called to be witnesses to the ends of the earth, carrying the message of the Risen Lord into every corner of society.
Sermon Ideas
Address the 'liminal space' between the Ascension and Pentecost. Preach on the posture of waiting and the assurance that Christ, though ascended, remains the head of the church, interceding for us at the right hand of the Father. Focus on the theme of 'sovereignty and service,' and how Christ's reign transforms our understanding of power.
