Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

The Feast of the Reign of Christ (Proper 29) draws the liturgical year to its solemn and joyful close, standing at the threshold of Advent to confess the mystery toward which the whole Christian story has been moving: that Christ is sovereign over all things. In Year A, the appointed psalm for this festival is Psalm 95, whose opening verse, "Come, let us sing to the Lord," has resounded as an invitation to worship across centuries of Jewish and Christian prayer. The verse names God "the rock of our salvation," a title that holds together the day's twin themes of majestic sovereignty and steadfast refuge. Here the church learns that the fitting response to Christ's reign is not passive assent but wholehearted, communal praise. As one year ends and another begins, the people of God mark this hinge of time in the way they always have: with song.

Scriptural Connection

The opening verses of Psalm 95, "Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation," call us to a joyful and resounding worship. This ancient psalm invites us to approach God with hearts full of praise and gratitude. As we enter this Season After Pentecost, celebrating Christ's Reign, these words remind us that our worship is not a passive observance, but an active, enthusiastic response to the One who is our sovereign Lord and the foundation of our salvation.

Sermon Ideas

For preachers and congregations alike, the invitation of Psalm 95:1 carries a practical charge that extends well beyond the sanctuary. The plural summons, "come, let us sing," reminds us that praise is a communal discipline, sustained not by private sentiment alone but by voices joined together in gratitude. In this Season After Pentecost, as we confess Christ's reign in a world often marked by division and weariness, we might ask what it means to live as people who shout for joy to the rock of our salvation: making room for thanksgiving in daily routines, speaking hope into anxious moments, and anchoring our choices in the sovereignty of God rather than the shifting currents of the age. Such joyful witness does not deny the world's troubles; it testifies that beneath them stands a foundation that cannot be moved. May the song we sing on Sunday become a way of life, animating our service, our speech, and our steadfast trust in the One who reigns.
