Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

In this Proper 24 Sunday of Year C, deep within the long Season after Pentecost, the lectionary pairs two texts that speak to the soul's struggle and its sustenance. Genesis 32:28 preserves the moment when Jacob, wounded yet clinging through the night, receives a new name from his mysterious divine companion—Israel, "one who strives with God"—marking both a profound transformation of character and the birth of a covenanted identity. Psalm 121:1-2 then lifts our gaze with the pilgrim's question and confident answer: "I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth." Together, these readings frame the life of faith as an honest wrestling that never excludes trust, for the God with whom we strive is the very One who watches over us and keeps us on the way.

Scriptural Connection

In Genesis 32:28, Jacob wrestled with God and was renamed Israel, signifying a profound transformation and a renewed covenant. Likewise, Psalm 121:1-2 assures us that our help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, offering a constant source of strength amidst life's struggles. These passages remind us that even in moments of intense wrestling and uncertainty, God's presence is our ultimate refuge and source of hope. We are called to continue in faith, trusting in the steadfastness of the Lord who watches over us.

Sermon Ideas

For preacher and congregation alike, these texts invite a spirituality that does not shy away from struggle but brings it honestly and persistently into God's presence. Jacob teaches us that seasons of striving can become the very place where God meets us and gives us a new name, even if we walk away marked by the encounter. The psalmist, meanwhile, models the practical discipline of lifting our eyes: when the hills around us seem ambiguous, we name our help plainly as coming from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. This week we are encouraged to make that confession concrete through honest prayer, through pausing to acknowledge God's provision, and through bearing one another's burdens in community. The blessing promised to those who persevere is not escape from the wrestling but the assurance that, in the midst of it, God is already at work reshaping us into the people God has called us to be.
