Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

The liturgical focus now turns toward the practicalities of Christian community and the ethics of the common life. This part of the season is dedicated to growing into the 'stature of the fullness of Christ.' It is a time for the church to reflect on its internal health and its external witness as a unified body in a divided world.

Scriptural Connection

Ephesians 4 calls for unity and the intentional use of diverse gifts for the building up of the body. It reminds us that the church is a living organism, not just an organization, requiring humility, gentleness, and patience to thrive. The text emphasizes that our maturity as believers is measured by our ability to speak the truth in love and to maintain the unity of the Spirit.

Sermon Ideas

Use the 'One Body' metaphor to address the vocation of the baptized. Preach on how every member has a role to play in the health of the whole. A pastoral hook could be the 'growing pains' of a community; just as a physical body grows, the church must mature by putting away old habits and putting on the new self.
