Theological Focus

The continuing rhythm of the Epiphany season draws the church deeper into the light revealed in Christ, and the Sixth Sunday After Epiphany, Year A, invites us to consider what it means to live within that light. Psalm 119:1 opens the lectionary's portion of the great Torah psalm with a beatitude: "Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord," a word that names blessedness not as a reward earned but as the deep joy of a life ordered by God's instruction. The epistle reading, 1 Corinthians 3:7, sets this invitation within its proper horizon, reminding us that "neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth." Held together, these verses trace a faithful rhythm of grace and response: God's work awakens and sustains, while we are summoned to walk blamelessly in the ways made known to us. This week, then, becomes an occasion for renewed attentiveness to the divine law as gift rather than burden, and for humble trust in the God who alone brings our labor to fruit.

Scriptural Connection

The Sixth Sunday After Epiphany, Year A, calls us to reflect on God's faithfulness and our response. The Psalmist declares in Psalm 119:1, "Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord." This encourages a life lived in sincere obedience to God's word, not out of obligation, but out of a deep love for the One who blesses us. While 1 Corinthians 3:7 reminds us that human efforts are secondary to God's divine work, the primary focus for this Sunday is the blessedness found in walking blamelessly in God's ways, understanding that true fulfillment comes from aligning our lives with His divine law.

Sermon Ideas

So we go from this place not to heroic striving but to faithful walking, allowing the blessed way of Psalm 119:1 to take shape in the ordinary rhythms of our lives—in honest speech, in patient service, in the daily return to God's word that forms our desires as much as our deeds. Paul's reminder in 1 Corinthians 3:7 tempers our labor with humility, for whether we plant or water, it is God alone who gives the growth, and this frees us to work diligently without anxiously measuring our outcomes. The blameless walk, then, is not a record of perfection but a posture of trust: ordering our steps by God's law while leaving the fruitfulness of our efforts in God's faithful hands. As the Epiphany light continues to spread through these winter weeks, may our lives become quiet testimony to this blessedness, that others might glimpse in our walking the goodness of the God whose law is grace, whose work endures, and whose blessing attends all who take refuge in Him.
