Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

The Third Sunday in Lent marks the season's turning point, as the Church settles into the long middle stretch of its forty-day sojourn toward Easter. Lent itself is a kind of wilderness, a deliberate season of simplification and self-examination that mirrors Israel's years of testing between Egypt and the Promised Land. Year C brings us Paul's sober word from 1 Corinthians 10:9, where the apostle warns believers not to "put Christ to the test," reaching back into Israel's desert history to address a church tempted toward impatience and presumption. His concern is not that God stands distant and severe, but that the God who accompanies us in the barren places deserves our trust rather than our grumbling. As we continue the Lenten journey, this week invites honest reflection on the ways we test God—and on the faithfulness that sustains us when the testing comes.

Scriptural Connection

In 1 Corinthians 10:9, Paul reminds the Corinthian church not to "put Christ to the test," drawing a parallel to the Israelites who grumbled against God in the wilderness. This passage cautions us against succumbing to impatience and doubt, especially during times of trial. Just as the Israelites were tested in their journey, we too are called to trust God's providence, even when our circumstances feel like a barren land. Let us resist the temptation to "test" God with our complaints, but instead, find strength and sustenance in His unfailing presence.

Sermon Ideas

As we journey through this Lenten season, Paul's warning invites us into honest self-examination rather than anxious self-reliance. The disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are not means of earning God's favor but practices that open our hearts to the Christ who accompanies us, as surely as the Rock followed Israel through the desert. When the way grows long and patience wears thin, we may still bring our laments before God in trust, for honest complaint offered in faith differs greatly from the testing that presumes upon divine grace. May we receive this season, then, as a gift—a wilderness in which our hunger deepens our dependence and our thirst draws us toward the living water. In this spirit, let us walk the weeks ahead with humble and watchful hearts, confident that the One we are tempted to test is the same One who faithfully walks beside us.
