Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

Following the feeding of the multitude, we move to the stormy sea, where the focus shifts to the nature of faith and the identity of Jesus as Lord over the chaos of creation. This Sunday invites us to trust in the presence of Christ even when the winds of life are against us and the night is dark.

Scriptural Connection

Matthew 14’s account of Jesus walking on water and Peter’s subsequent sinking provides a vivid metaphor for the life of discipleship. It acknowledges that while we may falter, Christ’s hand is always extended to catch us. The text reveals that the I Am is present in the midst of the storm, bringing peace to the terrified.

Sermon Ideas

Preach on faith in the storm. Use the hook of getting out of the boat to discuss the risks of following Jesus, while emphasizing that the goal is not our own bravery, but keeping our eyes on the Savior. Address the reality of doubt not as a failure, but as a place where we encounter the saving hand of God.
