Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

Standing on the threshold of the end of the church year, this Sunday focuses on the anticipation of Christ’s return as the righteous Judge. The theological weight of this day lies in the promise of equity and the setting right of all things. It is a season of holy expectation, where the Church prepares to transition from the long green season of growth into the contemplative waiting of Advent.

Scriptural Connection

Psalm 98 reappears with an emphasis on the Lord coming to judge the earth with righteousness. Unlike human judgment, which is often flawed or biased, the divine judgment celebrated here is a source of comfort and joy. The psalmist envisions the seas roaring and the floods clapping their hands in anticipation of this arrival. It reminds the modern believer that God’s justice is the ultimate fulfillment of the world’s deepest longings for peace.

Sermon Ideas

A sermon for this Sunday could tackle the often-intimidating concept of 'judgment' by reframing it as 'divine setting-to-rights.' Use the imagery of the clapping floods and singing hills to illustrate a world eager for its Creator’s touch. The hook could be: 'What if the Judge is the one who loves us most?' This approach provides pastoral comfort while maintaining the intellectual gravity of eschatological hope and the call to live justly now.
