Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

In the early weeks of the Season After Pentecost, the liturgy explores the expanding boundaries of the community of faith. This Sunday emphasizes that the grace of God is not confined by national, ethnic, or religious borders. It is a time to marvel at the unexpected places where faith takes root, reminding the Church that the Spirit often blows where it will, frequently surprising those within the traditional fold.

Scriptural Connection

The healing of the Centurion’s servant in Luke 7 presents a remarkable model of faith from an outsider. The Centurion, a Roman officer, demonstrates a profound understanding of Jesus’ authority that even Israel’s leaders lacked. His humility—'I am not worthy'—and his absolute trust in the power of Jesus’ word serve as a timeless example of how we are to approach the Divine. It challenges us to recognize the 'unlikely' saints in our own midst.

Sermon Ideas

Preachers can focus on the theme of 'Faith Without Borders.' The Centurion’s story is a perfect entry point for discussing how we define 'insiders' and 'outsiders.' A pastoral hook might involve the Centurion’s recognition of authority: do we trust the Word of God as much as this soldier did? The sermon should encourage the congregation to look for God’s work in the people they might otherwise overlook or exclude.
