Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

Traditionally known as Laetare Sunday, this day offers a brief respite and a focus on the light of God’s grace. It reminds us that even in the midst of Lenten discipline, the joy of salvation is our ultimate destination and the source of our strength.

Scriptural Connection

John 3 presents the radical nature of God’s love for the world. It emphasizes that Christ came not to condemn, but to save, inviting us to step out of the shadows of fear and into the light of truth where we are fully known and loved.

Hook into the tension between light and dark. Preach on the lifting up of the Son of Man as both a crucifixion and an exaltation. How do we respond to a love that is so vast and demanding? Invite the congregation to move from condemnation to the freedom of grace.
