Lectionary Meaning

Theological Focus

Advent begins in the shadows, calling the faithful to a posture of watchful waiting. It is a season of holy longing for the restoration of all things. As we enter this new liturgical year, we are reminded that our hope is not in our own efforts, but in the promised return and presence of Christ.

Scriptural Connection

In Mark 13, Jesus urges his followers to 'keep awake' amidst the uncertainty of the world. This is not a call to fear, but to a heightened awareness of God’s presence breaking into our present reality. In a culture of distraction, the command to watch is a radical call to spiritual alertness and intentional living.

Sermon Ideas

Address the tension between the 'already' and the 'not yet.' Preach on how we maintain hope as a form of spiritual resistance against despair. The sermon should encourage the congregation to look for signs of the Kingdom in the midst of upheaval, trusting that the Master of the house is indeed coming to bring peace.
